The Yonghe Temple, also known as the Lama Temple, is one of Beijing’s most magnificent and well-preserved Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. Originally built in 1694 as a residence for Prince Yong, it was later converted into a temple when he became Emperor Yongzheng. As a place of worship and pilgrimage, the temple remains an important spiritual center, offering a peaceful retreat amid the bustling city.
The complex blends Han Chinese and Tibetan architectural styles, featuring ornate halls, golden rooftops, and intricate carvings. Inside, visitors can admire stunning Buddhist statues, vibrant murals, and the towering 18-meter Maitreya Buddha, carved from a single piece of sandalwood.
