Da heute der letzte Tag im chinesischen Jahr ist, sind meine Frau und ich zur Feier des Tages mal wieder Essen gegangen. Auf dem Weg vom Fitnessstudio nach Hause ist uns vor einigen Tagen ein äthiopisches Restaurant namens Roha aufgefallen und so fiel die Wahl auf selbiges. Eins vorweg: Ich bin noch nie in Afrika, geschweige denn Äthiopien gewesen, und ich bin wahrlich weder ein Restaurantkenner noch ein Gourmet.
Als erstes begrüßte uns ein recht intensiver Geruch von Räucherkerzen o.ä, an den man sich aber relativ schnell gewöhnt hat. Das Innere ist voll mit äthiopischen Objekten (Bildern, Tischdeko etc.) und vermittelt einen etwas zusammengewürfelten, aber trotzdem authentischen Eindruck. Die sanitären Anlagen sind sauber und neu, die Bedienung war nett und freundlich.
Das Esserlebnis im Roha war – zumindest für mich – wirklich etwas besonderes. Die meisten Gerichte werden in Körben und landestypisch ohne Besteck serviert. Stattdessen bekommt man dazu einen pfannkuchenähnlichen Fladen namens Injerra mit dessen Hilfe man die Speisen greift und in den Mund befördert. Essen mit den Händen! 😀 (Natürlich bekommt man vorher aus einer großen Kanne Wasser über die Hände gegossen und dazu ein Handtuch gereicht) Und geschmeckt hat es auch noch hervorragend. Wir hatten die gemischte Platte Roha Spezial und die würde ich auch jedem, der zum ersten Mal kommt, empfehlen. Man erhält einen schönen Überblick über die äthiopischen Gerichte und satt wird man mit Sicherheit auch.
Also alles in allem ein wirklich tolles Restauranterlebnis, dass ich nicht so schnell vergessen werde. Empfehlenswert! (Review Ratings)

The Hold Steady remind me very much of Tom Petty, both the voice of the leadsinger and the style of music. You should know that even though it’s not my favorite kind of music, I do like Tom Petty quite a bit (check out Wildflowers!). And I do like the Hold Steady’s new album “Heaven Is Whenever”. With the exception of “The Weekender” it lacks real highlights – the kind of songs that you put on your private Best-Of compilations – but it’s a very nice piece of music, diversified, yet with a very distinctive style. It’s one of those albums where the whole is bigger than it’s part (The National’s High Violet is another example). I give it 3.5 stars out of 5. (Review Ratings)

Last autumn at Photokina, I had the opportunity to attend the Chip Playmate Shooting and I managed to get a few nice shots myself. Now I finally got around to develop them. The model Michaela Grauke really had skin like china and looked much more natural and beautiful than on some of those images of her that you find on the internet, so very little work was done in Photoshop on those pictures. Enjoy!

Alkoholexzesse, Waffenspielereien, sexuelle Belästigung und sonstiges Missverhalten bei der Bundeswehr. Um es mit den Worten von D.B. zu sagen: “Was kommt als nächstes – ausländerfeindliche Parolen auf dem NPD-Parteitag, schlüpfrige Witze bei Mario Barth…?” 🙂

Ja eine große Überraschung ist das natürlich alles nicht. Wo junge Männer mit zu viel Zeit aufeinanderhängen, da kommen sie auf dumme Ideen. Wo ältere gelangweilte Männer rumhängen, bildet sich auch nur selten ein Satre-Lesezirkel. Trotzdem ist es doch irgendwie gut, dass sich das Kollektiv noch über solche Dinge aufregen kann. Das schickt doch zumindest die richtigen Signale. Wäre doch schlimm, wenn wir sowas nur mit einen Schulterzucken abtun und nicht zumindest versuchen würden, etwas dagegen zu tun.

Deshalb: Brutalstmögliche Aufklärung!

Ich liebe Weltuntergangsszenarien mindestens genauso wie sonstige urbane Legenden. Deshalb war ich auch sehr erfreut, heute einen schönen Übersichtsartikel auf scienceblogs zu finden. Für die, die keine Zeit zum Selberlesen haben, sei gesagt, dass sie entgegen aller Berichte nächstes Jahr doch besser Weihnachtsgeschenke kaufen sollten.

  The Samsung WB2000 has beaten out the other contenders for the title of best ultra-compact camera. 24-120mm Zoom, 10MP, F2.4 aperature wide (only F5.8 tele though), Full HD, 10 FPS in full resolution, 3 ” 920,000* pixel amoled screen, ultracompact (100 x 59 x 22 mm) size, aperature, shutter speed and manual mode, Dual IS and RAW, a very nice package. There are a few funny gimmicks, too, some less useful, like 1000 FPS in 138×78 resolution (haha!), Action Panorama mode (working only hm-hm when I tried it), Strichzeichnungsfilter, some much more interesting like taking full-resolution picture while recording video and intervall shooting. You can select an AF spot and manually focus, too. The current street price here is 275€, so I can see myself getting one come Christmas.

• The battle for best photo backpack with sling function was a very tight one, but eventually, the Tamrac Evolution 8 beat out the Kata 3N1-33 by an inch. The Tamrac is a little heavier, but also cheaper (street price). In the end, the Tamrac just seems better crafted.

  And as a final result from the races, the 70-200mm contest goes into overtime. Is the HSM of the Sigma worth the extra 100€? For do I go with the 5 year warranty of the Tamron? Otherwise, they seem to close to call.

• I took part in the Sanyo Gran Prix, a two-round Carrera race. It’s the first time I played Carrera and after finishing second in the first round to qualify, I won the whole thing in thanks to my competitor’s inability to stay on the course. Slow and steady wins the race (although I had a round unter 9 seconds, which is not bad). And hey, I won a mug!
• Lens-Babies sure are fun.
• I looked through the viewfinder of a Leica S2. It’s not a viewfinder, it’s a window. Only the Sony A900 comes close to that.
• The aforementioned S2 was used to demonstrate a HDRI automatization program developed by the Cologne Technical College that – instead of creating a 32-bit file – creates a RAW file that can the open in a RAW converter and create very natural looking HDR images. Great stuff!
• Looking for a single-SLR-bag, it’s again Tamrac vs. Kata, Velocity 6x vs. LighTri-312 DL B.
• There are several ways manual focus is implemented, but hardly anyone gets it right. The focus magnifier has to go really far so that you can actually see small details. Then show the zoomed in area in an overlay (The Sony A55 does it just right).
• I am now the proud owner of a Green Pod and a Lumiquest Promax.

* According to the Samsung website. DPReview lists only 614,000 LCD dots, which is still pretty good for this class.
